Cookie Policy.

This site uses one essential storage entry to remember your cookie banner choice, plus optional aggregate analytics that do not require cookies. That is the entire footprint. Detail below.

01What is a cookie 02What we use 03Third-party cookies 04How to control them 05Changes to this policy

01 · What is a cookie

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. localStorage is a similar but more recent mechanism. Both let the site remember information across page loads — for example, that you have already dismissed a banner.

02 · What we use

The Field Guide site uses exactly one storage entry on the user's device:

  • fg.cookieConsent.v1 — first-party, stored in localStorage. Records your choice on the cookie banner (accepted or declined) and a timestamp, so we do not show you the banner again. Expires after 12 months or when you clear browser storage.

We do not set advertising cookies. We do not set cross-site tracking cookies. We do not fingerprint your browser.

03 · Third-party cookies

The site loads web fonts from Google Fonts. Google Fonts itself does not set cookies on font requests, but Google's servers will receive your IP address and user agent as part of the standard HTTP request, the same way any other CDN does. Our fonts have system fallbacks; if the third-party fetch is blocked the site still renders correctly.

If we enable an analytics tool in the future, it will be a privacy-respecting, cookieless option (e.g. Plausible, Fathom, or a self-hosted equivalent), and this page will be updated to disclose it.

04 · How to control them

You have several layers of control:

  • The cookie banner. First visit, you can accept or decline. Since the only storage entry we set is the consent state itself, "decline" simply means we'll ask again next time you visit.
  • Re-open the banner. Use the link in the footer to revisit your choice at any time.
  • Browser settings. All major browsers let you block or delete cookies and local storage globally or per-site. See the help pages for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

05 · Changes to this policy

If we add cookies, change providers, or introduce trackers, this page will be updated and the "last updated" date at the top will change. Continued use of the site after an update constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
